center of accreditation and quality assurance of the swiss universities

EPFL is a leading centre for mathematical education and research. It comprises four institutes and a research centre devoted to all major areas of pure and applied mathematics. Our faculty members collaborate with the best academic and industrial research centres throughout the world. The strength of mathematics at EPFL stems from an internationally-visible core research program in a variety of subjects and fruitful interdisciplinary interactions both within and outside the EPFL.

The Master of Mathematics provides a high level education, oriented towards either fundamental mathematics (algebra, analysis, number theory, probability, geometry and topology) or applied mathematics (applied analysis, numerical analysis, probability, statistics, optimization). This 90 ECTS credits degree leads to various careers in teaching, private companies, and governmental institutions. It is also an excellent preparation for students planning to follow a PhD program in mathematics.

The Master of Mathematical Sciences is focused on applications of mathematics (operations research, applied probability and stochastic processes, statistics, numerical analysis and scientific computing). This 120 ECTS credits programme includes a 30 ECTS engineering internship in industry and positions ideally for a career in various fields such as financial mathematics, banking and insurance, data analysis, industrial modelling and computation. It can also be a springboard for research in applied mathematics.

The Master in Mathematical Sciences offers two orientations: Applied mathematics and Statistics and finance.

Who should apply?

• Anyone holding a Bachelor degree in mathematics or an equivalent degree and interested in pursuing a high level mathematical education.
• Students from related backgrounds (physics, computer science, engineering, and so forth) may also apply provided they are highly motivated and possess outstanding mathematical qualifications.
